This camp is not for slackers, Guru Travel is a hard working camp which helps the SLWCS in their goal of solving the human elephant conflict of Sri Lanka and teaches English to the village kids. Through early morning meditation and daily group feed back everybody has a chance to grow. Through an ESL program we authentically connected with the local village children who showed their appreciation with an astonishing show for us at the end of the trip. In our science program we hiked for miles in Wasgamuwa’s brush and forests tracking elephants and helping the SLWCS with their research of the elephants’ natural migration path. Everything from testing the electric fences to analyzing poop, our science program took on the daily tasks of the SLWCS team. This camp is not all hard work, we traveled around Sri Lanka experiencing everything from the beautiful scenic Knuckles mountain range to the sweltering hot city of Kandy packed with history and colorful saris in every direction. On this trip not only did I make some great friends, I positively impacted a village — a feeling I will never forget.

Everything about Sri Lanka, the people, the lifestyle, the food, captivated me and made it hard to leave. Choosing Guru Travel as a way to spend my summer was definitely the best decision I have ever made. I learned so much about myself and the world around me and would recommend this experience to anyone.

Guru Travel is so much more than a travel program; it is a fully immersive travel experience. It is some of the most rewarding work I have ever done. The deep connections we formed with the people of Wasgamuwa made it feel like a second home and by the end of the trip none of us wanted to leave. As a group our daily meetings provided us with a safe and open forum for volunteers to get to know each other and express themselves. Overall, Guru Travel was a multi faceted travel experience like no other; fun, challenging and rewarding.

My time in Sri Lanka was the most incredible experience I have ever had. I honestly have trouble finding the right words to express the tremendous transformation I feel after having experienced the Guru Travel program and the Sri Lankan culture. Living in the field house really gave me perspective as I realized the difference between needing something and wanting something. Every day was used to it’s full capacity and now I can say I know what it means to live life to the fullest.

Going to Sri Lanka with Guru Travel was truly a life changing experience. I not only learned a lot about the Sri Lankan people and culture, but I also learned so much about myself. I believe my experiences changed me for the best and I am eternally grateful for my time there.
